He Will

Zechariah 4
Then the angel who talked with me returned and wakened me.... I asked the angel who talked with me, "What are these, my lord?" He answered, "Do you not know what these are?"

"No, my lord," I replied. So he said to me, "This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: 'Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,' says the LORD Almighty. "What are you, O mighty mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become level ground. Then he will bring out the capstone to shouts of 'God bless it! God bless it!' “Then the word of the LORD came to me: "The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this temple; his hands will also complete it. Then you will know that the LORD Almighty has sent me to you.
"Who despises the day of small things? Men will rejoice when they see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel."

We see the small things, our small beginnings. We see only the foundation of the temple, what we have left to do.... In my journey with health, I get scared at the long journey. People ask me if I am feeling better. I want to say yes, and almost feel guilty saying no. We live by measurable progress; we live in an empirical world; we live in a pragmatic world; we live in a microwave world. We want results, and we want them fast.

Journeys are long. Healing is long. The changes can be scary, challenging. It calls for perseverance. Courage. Mountains loom.

But our Lord sees the big picture. He sees the mountains that will become level. He knows it is his power. We have a big God who can do all things and chooses to do them through us, ordinary people. And I love the promise that Zerubbabel began it, sees it as small, but he WILL COMPLETE it. In one way, I can’t make that promise to myself or to you. Our task that we begin may not be completed. I pray I have complete healing, but I live in a fallen world. If I am completely healed, it will be to a body that dies. I don't know your certain task or challenge; you may complete it.

But I can make two promises. I can promise you that we serve the same God who was with Zerubbabel, the God of small beginnings and great things, the God who levels mountains, the God who works by his spirit and power and not our own strength. Because of that, he can do more than we can ask or imagine through him whose power is at work in us (Eph. 3:20).

I can promise he will complete his plans for you (1 Thes. 5:23-24; Phil. 1:6; Rom. 8:28-30). His plans are far better, as difficult as they may seem from our limited perspective. If complete healing is not in his plan for me, it is because he has a far greater good that he WILL complete. There is no mountain that will stand between you and his greatest good for you that he will complete. He is God, sustainer of the stars, supervisor of the universe, the one who strengthens you in each and every moment so that those mountains seem as level ground. And we will rejoice.

He will. By His Spirit. Do not despise the small steps in light of the big mountains. God is bigger.
