Review: Answers to Prayer
"A scared world needs a fearless church" - A. W.
Tozer
We live in a world where we need faith. We live in a time
where God has been dismissed as irrelevant, a distant deity, a hard-hearted
judge, a when-I-die-fire-insurance-but-not-applicable-to-my-daily-life, a god
who abandoned me and let horrible things happen to me. We live in a world that
needs to see God in new ways, in new light, in new revelations. Our neighbors
need to see God acting in our lives.
What are you willing to undertake to show God to the world?
To build people’s faith? To make the glory of God known?
What are you willing to do to have the faith that shows God
big?
George Muller took that challenge, and chronicles it in his
timeless classic, Answers to Prayer. We
know George Muller as an avid supporter of missions and a man who cared for an
incredible number of orphans. But why did he start his orphan houses?
The answer may surprise you: Yes, to help orphans both
physically and spiritually, but after noting these, in Muller’s words: “…but
still, the first and primary object of the work was (and still is:) that God
might be magnified by the fact that the orphans under my care are provided with
all they need, only by PRAYER and FAITH without anyone being asked…. Whereby it
may be seen that God is FAITHFUL STILL and HEARS PRAYERS STILL…. My Spirit
longed to be instrumental in strengthening [other Christian’s] faith, [by
showing] them proofs, that He is the same in our day.” He started orphan houses
to SHOW GOD ANSWERS PRAYER.
To show a world in their time of need the timeless God.
His book, Answers to
Prayer, is a collection of journal entries chronicling God’s faithfulness.
Never once did he ask for money, even when things were pressing. Even when
there was no food on the table. Do you want to be motivated to pray? Do you
want to see God answering real prayers? Inspired? Faith built? Answers to Prayer is fodder for the
fire.
Our world still has the same need.
Our God is still the same God.
Lord, let me believe you for such things! Let me prevail in
prayer! Let me show the world how you answer prayer!
Are we scared of what that faith may demand? But oh, listen
to Muller’s journal of how precious it was to believe! Of how God was always
faithful! More than that, look to our Lord, who came all the way from heaven to
earth, who gave his own life, who conquered death and the greatest enemies, who
is now reigning on high. Good. Powerful. Faithful. This is our God that the
world needs to see; this is the God who will empower us to live by faith.
