Small beginnings

I know that this is a long passage, and I am sure you are busy...

Zechariah 4:
The angel said to Zechariah, "This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: 'Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,' says the LORD Almighty. "What are you, O mighty mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become level ground. Then he will bring out the capstone to shouts of 'God bless it! God bless it!' ...The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this temple; his hands will also complete it. Then you will know that the LORD Almighty has sent me to you. Who despises the day of small things? Men will rejoice when they see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel."

We see the small things, the small beginnings. We often see only the foundation of the temple and what is left to do...But our Lord sees the big picture. He sees the mountains that he will make level. He knows it is in his power. We have a big God who can do all things--and chooses to do them through us, ordinary people. And I love the promise that Zerubbabel began it and sees his small efforts in the face of mountains....but he WILL COMPLETE it. I can't make that same promise to you, but I can promise you that we serve the same God who was with Zerubbabel, the God of small beginnings and great things, the God who levels mountains, the God who works by his spirit and power and not our own finite strength. Because of that, he can do more than we can ask or imagine through him whose power is at work in us (Eph. 3:20).
